Computer Backup, Data Recovery
Don't be afraid, be ready! It is critical to have a backup plan for your computer -- one that you know how to use AND that works. PCs, Servers, Macs and even your cell phones require a backup plan and the plan will differ for each system. There are situations where you may decide to not have a backup plan. Whatever the case, do your research, understand what is involved and make the decision. We're here to help.
Having your systems protected will allow you to rest easier with the assurance that you have your critical data / pictures / files saved in the event of an emergency. Computers have issues every day, so outsmart them -- be prepared.
For PCs and Laptops, there are many options. Servers and Macs will be covered next. With any system, the option you choose will depend on your budget and requirements.
Among the many options, you can elect one of the following:
- Online - there are many good reasons to backup to an online or internet location We find that many times our customers are connected to the internet, but forget to connect to their backup device (or it becomes full, disconnected or some other reason). Online backups enable you to backup your system to an internet company where it can be retrieved later. There are pros and cons of each solution, so be sure and consider the options before making a purchase. There are many levels of software that you can purchase. We like such products as iBackup for larger implementations and such solutions as Carbonite and Mozy for home solutions.
- Carbonite - for situations where your budget may be lower and you only need a single copy of your file saved (however, files are saved for 30 days so that you can retreive them). Budget friendly and technically sound. Also, the nice 'indicator' that appears next to each file is very comforting to allow you to know if the file is part of your backup. Last, very easy to add a file or folder to the backup process.
- Mozy - "Businesses today are being asked to do more with shrinking budgets and fewer resources. With digital data continuing to grow at an estimated 80% each year and 140,000 hard drives crashing each week in the U.S. alone, backing up this data is a critical task for any business. Traditional backup solutions can be expensive and take weeks to implement, leaving your business vulnerable to revenue and productivity loss."
- ' External ' backup - Budget conscious consumers might consider a backup solution that is, for most intents and purposes, a one-time investment. This approach uses an external drive with a software program that performs the backup for you. So far, we prefer Genie Home Backup for home backup needs. This product works great as long as you have your external backup drive connected.
